When Should I Winterize My Lawn and Garden?

It may seem a little too early (and HOT) to be thinking about winterizing your lawn and garden, but fall in South Texas is right around the corner and those cold fronts will be here before you know it.

Here are some helpful tips to winterize your South Texas lawn and garden:

Fertilizer

Fertilize your lawn in late fall, before the weather gets too cold. In the fall, do not use a fertilizer that contains high, quick-release nitrogen as it causes new, tender growth to occur. Instead, use high phosphorus and potassium fertilizers that will help to thicken cell walls and stimulate more sugar and carbohydrate production within the plant cell walls. This fortifies and protects the plant, somewhat like antifreeze does in a car radiator. Be careful that you do not fertilize your landscape too late in the season.

Raise Your Mower Deck

Most lawn mowers have adjustable decks, allowing you to raise or lower the deck depending on the season. Learn how to raise the deck on your mower before winter gets here. Increasing the height of your deck prevents you from mowing off the brown grass. In the winter, that top layer of brown grass insulates and protects your lawn.

Pruning

Don’t prune too early! Wait until late winter or early spring (February-March) and only trim off the dead, brown growth where it meets the new green coming up.

Water

While it may seem like you can cut back on the water bill over the winter, it is really important that you continue to water your lawn and garden throughout the winter. Before freezing temperatures occur, water everything thoroughly. Water displaces the air in the soil and is much slower to cool than air. Moist ground stays warmer than dry ground.
